The History of Florida Heights

Florida Heights sits in the southwest corner of Atlanta, part of a tapestry of historic Black neighborhoods that have defined the character of this city for generations. The streets here — Florida Avenue, Lawton, Gordon, Lucile — carry names older than living memory, laid out in an era when this part of Atlanta was still finding its shape.

Like many southwest Atlanta communities, Florida Heights grew through the mid-20th century as a working-class neighborhood with deep roots in faith, family, and mutual care. Churches anchored the blocks. Neighbors knew each other by name. Children played freely across front yards that nobody locked.

Today, that spirit endures — even as Atlanta changes rapidly around it. Florida Heights is a neighborhood that has seen hard times and good ones, loss and renewal. Its history belongs to the people who have lived it. And that's exactly why we're collecting it here.

A Few Landmarks in Time
EARLY 1900s
The Land Takes Shape
Southwest Atlanta's grid of streets begins to form as the city expands outward from its downtown core. The area that will become Florida Heights is laid out as residential land.
MID-20TH CENTURY
A Community Takes Root
Families put down roots. Churches, small businesses, and neighborhood institutions anchor the community. Florida Heights becomes home to generations of Atlantans who build their lives here.
LATE 20TH CENTURY
Change & Resilience
Like much of southwest Atlanta, Florida Heights navigates decades of economic shifts, disinvestment, and change. Through it all, legacy residents hold on — keeping the neighborhood's spirit alive and its history intact.
TODAY
A New Chapter
The Florida Heights Neighborhood Group forms to advocate for legacy residents, preserve the neighborhood's character, and ensure that growth serves the people who built this community — not the other way around.

"I've lived on Lawton Street for over 40 years. When I moved here, you knew every face on every porch. Saturday mornings smelled like someone's grandmother was cooking on every block. This neighborhood raised children. It buried its elders with dignity. It's still here, and so am I."
— Longtime Resident, Lawton Street
"My parents bought their house on Florida Avenue in 1978. I grew up running through these streets, going to church around the corner, walking to the corner store. When I moved back as an adult, it felt like coming home — because it was. I want my kids to feel that same thing."
— Returning Resident
"I moved to Florida Heights two years ago, drawn here by the community and the history I could feel in the streets. People look out for each other here in a way I've never experienced anywhere else I've lived. It's rare. I hope we can protect it."
